Anglo-Boer War Study of Australia
EXHIBITION GALLERY No. 9
Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902
Propaganda and advertising
This French postcard lampoons
the British chocolate soldier.
French, German and Dutch
cards intruded humour as a
propaganda tool in the war.
A Boer photographer recorded British dead at Spion's Kop, where Australian
casualties also occurred. The photographs were used to encourage Boer forces
elsewhere and to prove that British forces could be decisively defeated. The
pictures also achieved a propaganda effect when they fell into British hands.
ADVERTISING
A cheeky advert from Bovril manages
to spell out the company name in General
Roberts' campaign route. Bovril is a beef
extract hot drink that tastes like vegemite.
Lord Roberts featured in many advertisments like this
one for the Lemco Company.
Even cigarette manufacturers
used the Boer war to tout their
products.
